Ansonia Public Schools is a small, urban school district located in the Lower Naugatuck Valley region of Connecticut. Our district serves more than 2,600 children in four schools: John G. Prendergast School (K-6), John C. Mead School (K-6), Ansonia Middle School (7-8 and Pre-K), and Ansonia High School (9-12).
Ansonia Accomplishments
• Winning the Junior Achievement Titan Challenge: A team of four Ansonia High students surpassed their peers from 15 schools to win the 2nd annual JAT Titan business challenge held at Fairfield University in March 2012. The students received a $1,000 scholarship each and are now competing in a national competition.
• Earning a four-year Scholarship to a private university: Dan Kiley, a senior at Ansonia High School, was one of four students selected by the University of New Haven College of Business for a four-year scholarship worth more than $120,000.
• Recognizing Educational Excellence: Carol Merlone, Superintendent of Schools, and Joseph Apicella, Assistant Principal of Prendergast School, were selected as presenters in the 3rd Annual International Education Symposium, “The Brain in Education” held in October 2011 in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
• Increasing Academic Rigor: Ansonia High has increased its Advanced Placement course offerings to 11 and rolled out an engineering program in September 2011.
• Honoring an Ansonia Principal: Larry DiPalma, principal of Prendergast School, was selected as the Connecticut winner for the National Distinguished Principal Award in 2011.
• Improving Student Achievement: Ansonia Public Schools was removed as a Priority School District in 2011 thanks to its improvement in student achievement, as measured by the Connecticut standardized tests.
