Transition to Kindergarten

The Transition to Kindergarten, in Ansonia, is an exciting set of events for children and their families!

Our goal is to welcome each child as they enter our district, meet with parents and children together to review what everyone can expect on the first day of school and share important information and resources to make coming to school a positive experience for all.

Kindergarten Registration

The Annual Kick-Off to Kindergarten Registration Event will be announced.

To be eligible for kindergarten for the 2018-19 school year, children must be five years of age on or before January 1, 2018.  No exception can be made regarding the age of admission.

*Child’s Birth Certificate with the notarized seal

*Medical Form-copy of last physical

*Two Proofs of Residency (documents accepted- valid Connecticut driver’s license indicating Ansonia residency on the front of the license, utility bills such as ATT, Comcast or UI dated within timeframe of registration, deed to home or dated rental agreement showing student(s) name, escrow papers or signed mortgage commitment).

Kindergarten Orientation

Kindergarten Orientation is designed for the parents and child to meet the school principal, assistant principal, kindergarten teachers and other school staff members.  Children will have the opportunity to visit a kindergarten classroom, while parents participate in a Q & A regarding health records, daily schedule and ways to get involved.  Children and parents take a special bus ride and learn safety rules.  Before and After School Programs are available to provide information as well.  Families receive a Kindergarten Handbook at this time.  Kindergarten Orientation takes place during late May/early June at each elementary school.

Kindergarten Screening

Once a child is registered for Kindergarten, a Kindergarten Screening appointment will be scheduled.  The screening is a brief assessment that offers a snapshot of your child’s development.  It assesses the following skills:  Language, Motor, Concept, Self-Help and Social.  Each child is given a ‘Going to Kindergarten’ Book, which helps children identify different staff in the school.

Kindergarten Open House

Kindergarten Open House is another opportunity for you and your child to visit the school, meet school staff and enjoy a fun-filled morning.  Kindergarten Open House takes place in August at each elementary school.
