“MATH  MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND” math

Dear Families,

Math is something we are learning & using everyday. We use math at home, at work, at school and at play. We use Math everyday to:

math 1  *Count change for a purchase, write checks to pay bills, & gives allowance.

*Measure for a recipe, set the microwave, and decide how much food to fix, set the kitchen table, and measure a window for blinds.

*Compare things that are alike and different: clothing (winter vs. summer), math 2screws vs. nails, and sweetened cereal vs. unsweetened cereal.

*Tell time, time sports and see what day of the month it is.

*Select TV channels, set the VCR, and set an alarm clock. math 3

math 4

As you can tell from the list above Math is more than saying the correct answer to a number problem. It is using processes to solve problem. Then using those processes you learned to solve new problems.

math 5   Students in math are:

_ problem solvers who question, investigate, and explore problems.

_ math communicators who use words, numbers, or math symbols to explain situations.

_ students who use reasoning, think logically, see similarities and differences about things and make choices based   on relationships.

I have created grade-level Math activities for you so you can help your child become a great problem solver, communicator, and thinker! However, even with fun activities/games many times what we tell our children about math is what they believe.

math 6Let your child know that she can do math and she will begin to feel she can!  If math was not your best subject, do not say 'I hated math" or "I could not do math". Your child may start to feel that she can't do it either. Be positive when talking about math with your child. Last, but not least, have fun with math!

Sincerely yours in Math,

Mr. D.
