The Ansonia Public Schools staff came together to develop a variety of learning activities and resources for all grade levels and subject areas, PreK-12. Children and families can access the resources below to engage and maintain learning during the COVID 19 extended school closure.

 Students are suggested to spend 2-3 hours of their day on academics
  • Read independently for 20 minutes

  • Write for 20 minutes

  • Engage with math for 30 minutes a day

  • Grow their vocabulary with word work for 20 minutes a day

  • Read about science, technology, and social studies

  • Conduct inquiry and experiments

  • Listen to and talk about music

  • View and produce their own artwork

  • Engage in physical activity

  • Share their learning with others

READING

Ansonia Public Schools elementary students engage in reading learning with myOn. Lessons include instruction in vocabulary and comprehension. Through their Clever login, students can access their reading learning choosing myOn from the Clever Apps.  The suggested time frame for instructional use is 20-30 minutes per day.

Read-Alouds: Select books to listen to aloud at justbooksreadaloud.com. Students can listen to stories in different languages, as well. Another great resource for read-alouds is storylineonline.net. As students listen to the story, they should use their reading journals to jot down:

  • Questions they have

  • What is happening in the story

  • Ideas they have about characters and their actions

  • What the author wants us, as readers, to learn at the end of the story

PHONICS AND WORD WORK

Students can continue their instruction in phonics and word work with these sites. Through their Clever login, students can access their reading learning choosing Core 5 from the Clever Apps.  The suggested time frame for instructional use is 20-30 minutes per day.

WRITING

Using their notebooks, students should write about their opinions, thoughts and ideas every day. They can use the read-aloud texts they engage with above, or read and listen to fiction and nonfiction texts. The suggested time frame for instructional use is 20 minutes per day.

MATHEMATICS

At Ansonia Public Schools, elementary students engage in math learning with Eureka Math. Lessons include instruction in numbers and operations, algebraic thinking, measurement and geometry. Through Clever, students can access math learning to use our two main online programs; IXL and Reflex Math. The remainder of the links are free for all students to use. The suggested time-frame for use is 30 minutes.

  • IXL Math: With a comprehensive K-12 curriculum, individualized guidance, and real-time analytics, IXL meets the unique needs of each learner.

  • Reflex Math (Grades 1-6 only): A fluency program which allows students to work on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of facts.

  • Khan Academy: Students practice at their own pace, first filling in gaps in their understanding and then accelerating their learning.

  • Khan Academy Kids: This needs to be downloaded onto a device.

  • National Library of Virtual Manipulatives: A library of uniquely interactive, web-based virtual manipulatives or concept tutorials, mostly in the form of Java applets, for mathematics instruction (K-12 emphasis).

  • NEOK12: A collection of educational videos, games, quizzes, diagrams, and puzzles that kids love.

  • Achieve the core: The activities are designed to support students’ progress toward the grade-level numeracy and fluency articulated in college- and career-ready standards.

  • Math Drills: Free math worksheets including number sense, arithmetic, pre-algebra, geometry, measurement, money concepts and much more.

  • Students can also visit Greg Tang Math for games and other math learning opportunities.

  • Funbrain: Offers hundreds of games, books, comics, and videos that develop skills in math, reading, problem-solving and literacy.

  • Engineering Activities for Kids: STEM activities using regularly found items in the household.

SOCIAL STUDIES

The College, Career, and Civic Life Framework (C3) states that there are four major disciplines in social studies—civics, economics, geography, and history. Through Clever, students can access Studies Weekly, our  social studies curricula, in grades K-6 to expand upon these four major disciplines. Students can continue to explore social studies with the websites provided. The suggested educational time frame is 20 minutes per day.

SCIENCE

NGSS challenges students think and act like scientists as they explore and make sense of the world around them. Through Clever, students can access Mystery Science, our science curricula, in grades K-4. Students can also continue to explore science concepts with these websites. The suggested educational time frame is 15-20 minutes per day.

  • Mystery Science: Offers NGSS aligned lessons and videos

  • NASA's Kids Club: Provides games and activities to learn about NASA

  • NASA STEM Engagement: These science, technology, and engineering, and math activities are fun for kids, adults and the whole family

  • PBS for Parents: A show which explores the world around us that science technology are everywhere

  • Science Kids: Engages students in games and videos about many science topics

  • National Geographic Kids: Offers videos and articles

  • Switcheroozoo: At Switch Zoo you can make new animals, play animal games, build a biome, learn about animals, and hear animal music.

  • Climate Kids: (Grade 2 ONLY) Tells the story of our changing planet through the eyes of the NASA missions studying Earth

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Physical Education/Health
The CDC (Center for Disease Control) recommends that children and adolescents ages six through 17 years should achieve a minimum of 1 hour of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity each day, and activities that strengthen bones and build muscles at least 3 days a week.
These three types of physical activities should include:


• Aerobic: Most of the 60 minutes or more per day should be either moderate- or vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity such as walking, running, or anything that makes their heart beat faster.


• Muscle-strengthening: As part of their 60 minutes or more of daily physical activity, children and adolescents should include muscle-strengthening physical activity, such as climbing or doing push-ups, on at least 3 days a week.


• Bone-strengthening: As part of their 60 minutes or more of daily physical activity, children and adolescents should include bone-strengthening physical activity, such as jumping or running, on at least 3 days a week.
